It’s that time again. Christmas is here. Christmas is here! How do you photograph your Christmas tree? Here are some tips:

1. Flash Is Not Perfect.

This may seem counterintuitive but a flash will evenly light your tree. However, it will overpower any existing lighting. Keep the room lit with the light source you use and the lights on your tree on.

2. Use A Tripod

You’ll need to slow down your shutter speed because you will be using the ambient lighting in the room. Your shots will look blurry if you don’t have a tripod. Your camera will tell you that it takes 20-30 seconds to capture the shot, but don’t be discouraged. The tree isn’t going anywhere.

3. Set Iso To A Low Table.

A tripod is a great tool to help you avoid using a rapid shutter speed. The ISO can be kept low, at 100 or 200. This will reduce noise to a minimum.

4. Blur The Background.

You may need to use a wider aperture (around F/4) depending on the background of the tree.

5. Start Starbursts.

If you shoot at f/16, the background of your tree will be in focus. However, as an added bonus, the lights around the tree will have starbursts. This is because you used a small aperture for low-light photography.

6. Get Close.

You should also take close-ups of the branches, lights, and whole tree. You will likely capture a photo of yourself in a shiny bauble if you take a close-up.

7. Reduce The Camera Shake.

Use a cable release if you have one. To minimize camera shake when pressing the shutter, you can use the self-timer feature on the camera.

8. Include People

Don’t forget to capture your family and friends during the holiday season. You will need to increase the shutter speed to get a picture with your family members in it. However, try to keep the shutter speed at 1/50th of a second. Although it is not the best way to hold the camera, you and your family should still be able to remain still long enough to capture great shots.
