We all have a journeyman within us (or journey-woman, in that case). The exploration of Route 66 was the celebration of this selfsame journeying spirit. A great experience made a highway a legend. Rarely does this occur, but it happened on Route 66. Perhaps there is something in the name of the road, or perhaps the real American life, away from the hassles of the metropolis, was the reason, but it was.
The mystery of Route 66 still remains, and as the road has become extinct, the memories are all we have of the Mother of all roads. Many made the journey, few have forgotten and those who remember always remember the great adventure that the old road presented. The old road was replaced in 1985 by the Interstate Highway System, weed and grass have grown through the cracks of the old road, but Route 66 keeps on reappearing, in memories of a fantastic journey.
The Route 66 photos are all that we have of the old times, but they never fail to recreate the past. The past was amazing, and we all long back to get there on the road, driving into the sunset and resting at the roadside motels during the night. Some preferred to travel the night too, accompanied by the moons, stars, clear sky and the road signs. The Route 66 memories are celebrated even now, and the name has begun to again come back in the maps as stretches of the old road have been renamed as Historic Route 66.
The experience of the journey of Route 66 may have been forgotten by the people of the new generation but there are people who still cherish the old memories of the past and try to keep them alive in the form of photos, folk songs and TV programs. The photographs and the TV programs instantly connect these people with their glorious past and culture. This road may not be there but it reminds of the continuous forward journey of the mankind. Nothing in this world has been forever. Everything changes with time and with new advancements old things fade away giving place to the new and more beautiful.
