Are you looking to get into the holiday spirit? Chelsea Northrup, a photographer, shared this starburst zoom trick that will make your family holiday photos more interesting.

Northrup didn’t have to set up industrial-grade lighting in her living room to capture this stunning image. This technique requires a tripod, long shutter speed, creativity, and a bit of imagination.

Setting your composition is the first thing to do. You don’t need to follow the rule of thirds for this shot. Your lit subject should be at the center of your frame so that you can see all the light streaks. After you are satisfied with your preview display, attach your camera to a tripod. You’ll need a wide aperture and a fast shutter speed for your setting. Begin with a minimum of five seconds exposure. You can experiment with exposure times or f-stops depending on how the image turns out.

Once you are satisfied with the image, you can snap the shutter as normal. While the exposure is still being recorded, zoom in on the frame. What is the result? It’s an amazing photo that is surprisingly simple to achieve. This technique does not require any photoshopping or complicated editing. It records the effect in-camera. This tip is our gift to you this holiday season. Take a moment to grab your camera and capture a magical moment with your family as they gather around the Christmas tree.
